New publication: Dr. David Keith Ballow: Colonial Surgeon and Martyr to Duty
By Patrick J. Tynan
Father Pat Tynan, well known Brisbane historian, has recently added a biography of Dr. David Keith Ballow to his list of published work.Born in 1804, Dr.Ballow, a ‘gallant and jovial’ Scottish doctor, having graduated from the University of Edinburgh, migrated to Australia in 1834. He first worked in New South Wales as a colonial surgeon in Invermain (Scone) and Sydney. In 1838 he was transferred to Moreton Bay convict settlement. After this closed down, he became First Resident Surgeon at the Brisbane General Hospital.
He became involved in every aspect of the life of Brisbane. He served as a magistrate and coroner, was a leading member of the Church of England, was appointed to various trusteeships and boards dealing, among other things, with education and the arts, and was the first to grow cotton in Queensland. He died in 1850 from typhus contracted ministering to infected people on the quarantine station at Dunwich and is buried there. His name lives on in the Wickham Terrace building which bears his name.
The book is of considerable interest, not only to the medical profession, but also to those interested in the history of Brisbane in general. Anyone wishing to order a copy can do so by sending a cheque or money order to Pat Tynan, P0 Box 29, Royal Brisbane Hospital, Butterfield St., Herston, 4029. Price $30 (including postage) of which $5 goes to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
